Comet C/2023 Q1 (PANSTARRS) and NGC 2441

About this image

This faint comet came to perihelion on 2024 December 1 when it was 2.58 au from the Sun. Closest approach to the Earth (1.90 au) was on December 28 and it is now fading as it heads back into the outer Solar System. It is currently  at a far north declination in Camelopardalis and so well placed for us. NGC 2441 is a nice barred-spiral around 50 Mpc away. The comet is 2.0 au away and given that there are 3600 * 180 / pi = 206,265 au/pc the galaxy is around 5,000,000,000,000 times further away than the comet.
