About this image

This interesting spiral galaxy was discovered by Pierre Méchain in March 1781. It is a member of the Leo 1 galaxy group.

The image (obtained remotely using the COAST in Tenerife) shows a large, bright nucleus with short, thick bars linked to a well-defined wheel-like structure. Diffuse 'tails' give the overall impression of a crab shape.

Apparent mag. 11.4. Diameter c.46,000ly. Distance c.32.6million ly.
