About this image
This image was taken from a boat travelling south at 12 knots along the coast of Norway at 68deg N near Harstad. This image is a small part of an extensive event lasting several hours. The images were hampered by lights and the motion of the boat. The phenomenon covered the whole of the sky and displayed a great variety of shapes and was extremely dynamic. Green, caused by oxygen atoms at a height of 100kms was the predominant colour with showings of purple, usually only seen in a strong display, caused by hydrogen atoms
