Venus nightside, 24th February 2025
About this image
Venus' nightside imaged in good transparency but average seeing, which at times deteriorated badly due to Venus being low down and viewed across over a mile of housing in the town.
This image was generated by stacking 80% of the frames from the best 10 videos and 65% of the 5 next best, yielding a total of just over 48,000 frames with a combined exposure time of 24.4 minutes. Each video was stacked separately, then the stacked images themselves stacked before sharpening and contrast enhancement. Ten videos were either unusable or had a very small percentage of usable frames.
The comparison image of the surface heat map from WinJupos shows dark markings that agree well in position with the image but are more contrasty. These are the higher elevations on Venus which are cooler and emit less in the IR.
