Venus with cusp extensions

About this image

Venus was a very thin crescent when I viewed it this afternoon. By comparison with with some phase diagrams on my phone I estimated the phase to be 1%. This is smaller than the 3% predicted. The thinness of the crescent and the turbulent atmosphere meant that the illuminated edge seemed to flicker in different colours. Also, I am convinced that I could see cusp extensions where the terminator meets the edge of the disc. I could the line of the cusps curving back inwards rather than just being a straight line to the edge. See my drawing.
