About this image

Nick James is visiting me at the moment and last night as the sky cleared(with aurora and a bright first quarter moon in the sky) we looked on the MPC Possible Comet Confirmation Page and saw a new posting gb00795 ( which we think is a new Gennady Borisov discovery) The object is high in the northen sky at 85 degrees declination. We stacked 24x120s images and found the new object easily at mag 19.3. Positional measurements were sent to MPC for inclusion in the initial orbit calculations. Image attached.

This looks to have a very cometary orbit so it almost certainly is a comet. The perihelion is 3.6au on 2026 June 13. It will pass within a degree of the pole on May 23 and will be above +69 dec until next February. Unless something very surprising happens it won't get brighter than 18.5.
