About this image

The Quasar Mrk 478 is the Deep Sky Section Object of the Month for May.  Its spectrum shows strong broad H alpha, H beta and other emission lines, redshifted by 0.0773 compared with the published figure of 0.0777 (SIMBAD).

The object appeared stellar in the spectrograph guider (20x10s) though the SDSS image shows a bright core within a faint extended galaxy ~20 arcsec in diameter
