About this image

I'd set a challenge at my local society that everyone was to undertake an astronomical sketch for one of our coming informal meetings. Last night was convenient for me to have a go at my own sketch. I have had a set a Williams Optics binoviewers for several years and NEVER used them so I thought it was time to give them a try on the Moon with the C14. I've got wonky eyes and was worried it would be a nightmare setting them up but it was much easier than I thought and the views with the 20mm 66* WO eyepieces through the C14 was very nice at 196x magnification. The seeing was remarkably stable at 8:30pm (BST) when I started observing with a very bright sky. I did spend far too long just immersed in exploring the Moon and watching the gentle waves of seeing washing over the mare and highlands and I looked at various shadows and hoped to observe an impact event! I had a few goes at my sketch, but I am no artist and got bored of trying to draw what I saw and not what I thought I could see, and thought the seeing was too steady not to do some imaging. This was one of four regions on or near the terminator which I captured, at full resolution on the 585MC (no filters). 2000 frames captured in SharpCap and best 5% of the these stacked and sharpened in AS!4, and levels and curves etc adjusted in FastStone Image Viewer. I never get bored of just looking at smooth laval planes, and watching the smaller craterlets pop in and out of sharp focus, as well as marvel at the shadows cast by the numerous solitary rocky bodies poking up from the mare. More work on my drawing needed but happy with this view of the north eastern quadrant of the Imbrium basin.
