About this image

Brilliant Aristarchus is 40km wide. Note the radial dark bands that stretch up the inside wall, one suggestion is these are glass-rich impact ejecta. Since William Herschel's time there have been reports of transient events here, glows, bright spots, etc. In 1971 a spectrometer on the Apollo 15 Command Module detected radon gas in the locality.
