Palomar 15 Globular Cluster in Ophiuchus

About this image

By all accounts, Palomar 15 is the most difficult of the Palomar globular clusters to observe. Identification of this faint, diffuse cluster is made more difficult by there only being a handful (less in fact) of reference images. This PIRATE image shows the cluster as a very faint scattering of pin pricks at the centre of the image, but it would be very easy to miss it!

Palomar 15 was discovered by Fritz Zwicky in 1959, and was originally thought to be a dwarf galaxy.

Apparent mag. 14.0. Distance from the Galactic Centre c.123,600ly.
