About this image

The real story here is that this Class II3p open cluster at the centre of the Rosette Nebula was NOT discovered by prolific discoverer William Herschel!! Instead it was found by John Flamsteed in February 1690, almost 50 years before WH was born. Makes a change.

The well named Wrench Trunk (though I would prefer Spanner) can be seen in this COAST image, descending from the frame at top centre right.

Apparent mag 4.8. Distance c.5,200ly. Age: young <5 million yrs.
