About this image

A nice quartet of galaxies captured by PIRATE (Physics Innovations Robotic Astronomical Telescope Explorer) from Tenerife.

NGC4216 is the star of this particular show. A mag. 11.0 spiral galaxy, it is a member of the Virgo cluster. Distance: c.55million ly. Size: c.130,000ly, so somewhat larger than the Milky Way.

At upper left is NGC 4206, a mag. 12.2 spiral galaxy seen edge-on, probably also a member of the Virgo cluster but at a distance of c.67million ly. Size: c.98,000ly.

At lower right is NGC 4222, a mag 13.9 edge-on spiral in Coma Berenices, another Virgo cluster member. Distance c.65million ly. Size: c.72,000ly.

All three galaxies were discovered by William Herschel in April 1784.

IC 771 is a mag. 13.9 spiral galaxy, seen here as a fuzzy spot below the bright star to left. It lies about 222million ly away - a long way from the other three galaxies and a long way from anywhere!  It is also a Virgo cluster member. It was discovered by Rudolf Spitaler in April 1891 using a 27" refractor at Vienna University Observatory.

Several other unidentified fuzzy objects can also be seen.
