IC412, 413 & 414 Galaxies in Orion

About this image

IC412 IC413 are interacting lenticular galaxies, described by Dreyer as "very small" and "very faint". This COAST image amply confirms that judgement. Both were discovered by Edward Barnard in 1888 using a 12" refractor.

IC414 is a spiral galaxy. It was discovered by Sherburne Burnham in 1891 using the 36" refractor at Lick Observatory.

All three galaxies are around mag. 14.0. The bright star is mag. 7.42.
