About this image

Arp 106 consists of two faint interacting lenticular galaxies, NGC 4211 (mag. 14)  and PGC 39195 (mag. 15). In this PIRATE image, the faint tail of the lower galaxy can just be seen. These galaxies lie at a distance of c.321million ly. They were discovered by Edouard Stephan in April 1881 using the 31" Foucault reflector at Marseille Observatory.

To lower left is a spiral galaxy, PGC 39281. A number of other faint unidentified galaxies can also be seen.

The bright star is HD 106678, a mag. 8.3 yellow star.
