About this image

I don't often image open clusters but this has always been a favourite of mine, as it was one of the few I could just make out with the naked eye on a good night in the city where I grew up.

Located about 7,500 light years away in the Perseus arm of our Milky Way galaxy, NGC 869 and 884 are very young clusters in astronomical terms at about 14 million years – far younger than, say, the Pleiades (~100 My).
Being so young they feature numerous blue-white supergiant stars of spectral types O and B, and indeed the clusters are at the heart of the larger Perseus OB1 Association of young hot stars.

In this image, north is approximately at the 1 o'clock position.
