About this image

This is an enlarged crop from my image of the Lagoon Nebula. I've adjusted the image slightly to bring out the Hourglass Nebula, which is to the right of the centre of the image.

Each of the funnel-like structures is around half a light year long. The radiation from the adjacent, massive O-type star Herschel 36 is stripping them away. Herschel 36 is only about a million years old. It is a triple system producing intense ultraviolet radiation into the surrounding nebula.
