About this image

This seldom observed open cluster in Cepheus is the Deep Sky Section's August 'Object of Interest'. The cluster is embedded in emission nebula Sharpless 2-140. It was discovered by Marie Paris Pismis (who has an interesting biography - her daughter, grand-daughter and son-in-law became astronomers) and Marco Moreno-Corral.

This image, using the PIRATE (Physics Innovations Robotic Astronomical Telescope Explorer) on Tenerife, shows the cluster members well, with faint signs of nebulosity also visible. The nebula is being excited by the brighter of the close pair (centre-left) HD 211880.

The cluster lies at a distance of about 3,000ly. Date of discovery unknown (to me).
