About this image

This interesting galaxy has a bright nucleus and bar which touches two tightly-wound arms, giving the appearance of an oval, with the arms extending beyond. This image, using the Open University's PIRATE in Tenerife, shows these features well. The galaxy was discovered by William Herschel in May 1786.

Distance (estimates vary widely) c.68million ly. Diameter c.97,000ly. Apparent mag. 11.5.
