About this image

A quick animation from this morning showing rapid motion in the ion tail. The comet is now moving at almost 6 arcsec/min so these are 30s exposures. Each of the 17 frames is a stack of 10 subframes stacked on the comet's motion. A prominent kink in the tail is moving away from the head.

At some point I need to sit down and do a calibrated version of this since the background is not very flat due to the Moon. This output comes directly from a software processing chain that doesn't involve any input from me. It takes around 5 minutes to make this movie from the 170 input frames. There is a lot going on in the head too and I'll post a movie of that using a Larsen-Sekanina filter later today.
