Jupiter (IR-OSC) - 19/20 Dec 2025
About this image
Whilst I've often used IR to enhance colour (RGB or OSC) images of Mars and Saturn, I've never been a fan of it on Jupiter where it significantly altered the colour balance. However, I recently saw that @Tom Williams used a technique in GIMP described as 'IR wavelet decomposition' that worked extremely well, so not having GIMP I wondered whether there was something similar in Affinity Photo. After a bit of digging around I found the ‘frequency separation’ tool, which I believe does something similar, splitting the image into high and low frequency components. By adjusting a slider to determine what is classified as high freqency, I can then apply just that part of the IR data, using ‘linear light’ blend mode, to enhance the colour image without adversely impacting the natural colours of the OSC image.
NB Acquisition details are for the 1st image, being a combination of OSC (7k frames) and IR (12k frames). Details for the later image are 7k frames OSC and 10k frames IR.
