About this image

This spectacular, but seemingly little observed, galaxy was discovered by Wilhelm Temple (1821-1889*) in 1876.

Apparent mag.11.5. Distance c.115million ly. Diameter c.155,000 ly.

* Temple's obituary in The Sidereal Messenger concluded: "His friends cannot forget his pure and disinterested love which made of a humble workman a wise astronomer, gaining for his memory a name that will last as long as the study of the heavenly bodies is held in honor by men."
