About this image

NGC 1509 (left) is a mag. 13.7 spiral galaxy. It was discovered by Ormond Stone in 1886 using the 26.25" refractor at the Leander McCormick Observatory, Charlottesville, Virginia. Distance c.387million ly. Size c.82,000 ly.

PGC 14389 is a mag. 15(?) lenticular or possibly a spiral galaxy. Distance c.395million ly. Size c.70,000 ly.

It is unclear whether these two galaxies are close enough to be physically related.

Though small and faint, these remote galaxies are well seen in this image using the OU's PIRATE instrument.
