Comparison 7 September 2025 and 3rd March 2026 Lunar Eclipses

About this image

The times were within minutes of maximum eclipse. (Four minutes later than mid eclipse in Sept 2025, and two minutes later in March 2026.) In 2025 the altitude was 22 degrees and 41 degrees in 2026. Exact times can be supplied if necessary, but this is a simple comparison of mid eclipse.

There are two interesting points. The first is that the September 25 eclipse was deeper. The eclipsed Moon was darker, and the exposure was double that of the March 3rd event. (There has been minimal post processing, just small brightness and contrast adjustments.)

The second interesting point are the obvious effects of libration, particularly noticeable towards the limb.

Oh yes, for those eagle eyed, a third point, The Moon is actually smaller in the 2026 image! The semi diameter was 16' 09" on 7 Sep 2025 but only 15' 37" on 3rd March 2026.
