About this image

The magnificent Needle Galaxy, one of the deep sky's must-see objects -  imaged by the OU's PIRATE in Tenerife. It seems probable that this is what our own galaxy would look like if we could get far enough away - 90,000+ light years - to get the whole disk in the frame. It has always struck me as ironic to think that we can image so many hugely distant galaxies without ever being able to obtain a full image of our own.
