Telescopes at Lowell - Old and New pt 2
About this image
If you are ever anywhere near Flagstaff, Arizona it is well worth making a night-time visit to Lowell observatory on Mars Hill. The observatory was founded in 1894 by Percival Lowell and you can really feel the history here.
The 24-inch Alvan Clark refractor was installed at Lowell in 1897 and it is available for public viewing all evening although the queues get long. I had a nice view of Jupiter through it although the seeing was poor, probably because of the many people in the dome. It is a great feeling using the same telescope that Percival Lowell used to study Mars, particularly since his mausoleum is only a few footsteps away from the dome. You can also hear the mile-long, double-decker freight trains rumbling through Flagstaff through the night.
This picture was taken towards the end of the public observing session with the telescope pointed to Jupiter. You can also see the beautiful carpentry of the inside of the dome structure, made by the Sykes brothers. The same construction was used for the 13-inch astrograph dome. That instrument had a Cooke triplet lens and Tombaugh used it to discover Pluto.
