About this image

This small (relative to the Milky Way) spiral galaxy was discovered by William Herschel on 1 April 1788. It is home to a supermassive black hole of up to 20 million solar masses - a lot bigger than any of the 4,000 holes in Blackburn, Lancashire.

Apparent mag. 11.6 Diameter 25-30,000ly. Distance c. 50million ly.
