That's a really nice image.  And it does show the nova sitting in a slightly darker patch of sky, i.e. fewer stars.  This may explain the heavily dust obscured spectra observed for this object.

The lower star density around the nova is also shown well in Nick James image.

Nice to see the strong red colour too in this image. A combination of strong H-alpha emission and the significant dust reddening. As Mike says, the nova is fortunately in a dust lane which makes photometry easier since there are no interfering stars. The adjacent star clouds are very dense as shown in this image
