About this image

There are just over 205,000 stars in this image, the subject is one of them. A Wolf-Rayet star (WR124) surrounded by an envelope of material ejected over the millenia. This is a massive star estimated to be around 33 solar mass. Like all super massive stars they live fast and die young. WR124 may have a couple of hundred thousand years left in it before it explodes as a core collapse supernova.

Imaged over seven nights between 7th July - 13th July 2026
