About this image

S Cephei is one of the reddest stars visible in the night sky. it is a carbon-rich red giant about 2,000 light-years away.

With a surface temperature of only about 2,200 K, a B–V colour index of around +3.3, and a radius roughly 350–500 times that of the Sun, it is truly enormous.

Carbon molecules in its atmosphere absorb much of the blue and green light, producing its remarkable deep crimson colour and making it a favourite target for visual observers and astrophotographers.
