About this image

North eastern quarter of Mare Imbrium as observed on a 21.2 day old Moon, showing Crater Plato, upper third of image, and Mare Frigoris, the smooth plane above Plato. A number of isolated mountains, mons, can be clearly seen in the smooth plane of Mare Imbrium, beneath Plato, and their shadows cast to the east by the Sun to the left. The mountain due south of Plato, Mons Pico, sits about 2300m high above the flat lava plane beneath. South east of Mons Pico is crater Pizza Smyth, and further to the south east is Mons Piton, which stands about 2100m above the floor of Mare Imbrium. Another fascinating feature in this area is south-south-west of Mons Piton, and often is not labelled on lunar maps and atlases, but is often referred to as Thor's Hammer, as the feature resembles a hammer. This feature is not as high as the other two listed and only rises about 500m above the surrounding terrain. I imaged this whilst setting up for the Falcon 9 lunar impact which was obscured an hour later due to cloud.
