About this image

Due to one in a series of messups with the eclipse I missed the Diamond Ring at both ends. But perhaps it should be The Amber Ring anyway. I was late with this image and also the focus has softened but its a fair impression of how it looked as the Sun set into trees on a distant wooded ridge.

Really rather lovely.

I thought the diamond ring looked very white with my eyes directly in Spain (at  8 degrees high). Maybe the camera white balance can be adjusted in post processing a bit?

Hi there,

I'm sure I could adjust the colour balance and get white, but to be honest, this is a pretty good reproduction of how the second diamond ring looked from Lebrancon - not far from Molina de Aragon. I recall vividly how shocked I was when the diamond ring first appeared. I was expecting white/grey/silver, but the dust and smoke in the atmosphere combined with the normal atmospheric extinction created a golden hue. The picture is a fair representation of what we saw with the eclipse at 6 degrees elevation.

I looked at some overhead images from the day before and there were diffuse patches of smoke swirling around Spain from the fires NW of Madrid and from down toward the boarder near Huelva and the days of fires. Certainly, from Madrid two nights before, there was so much crud in the air we would have been lucky to see any corona - the sky was only faintly blue overhead.

To me, it made the occasion unique and all the more memorable.
