About this image

Imaged with the SeeStar S50 over three nights in August, the area of IC1396 around the Garnet Star Mu Cephei.

Mu Cephei was named the Garnet Star by William Herschel, and is often cited as the reddest star visible to the naked eye. It is a red supergiant with a diameter of over half a billion kilometres, around 3.5 AU. If placed at the position of the Sun, it would engulf all the planets out to the asteroid belt.

IC 1396 is a stunning emission nebula in the constellation Cepheus.
