VV Cephei. V and R Bands vs Time.

About this image

VV Cephei is a binary star consisting of an M type supergiant and a B type main sequence star. A strong stellar wind from the M type star is captured by the B type to form an accretion disk. The H alpha spectrum of VV Cephei shows an H alpha emission line, with V and R components, from the accretion disc superimposed on the continuum, with absorption lines, from the M type star. This is a plot of the height of the V (green dots) and R (red dots) bands, normalized to the height of the continuum, vs time. There is an ~45 day period thought to be due to nutation of the B star.
