About this image

This pair of spiral galaxies is the Deep Sky Section's September 'Object of Interest'.

The brighter galaxy (NGC 7469, mag. 12) was discovered by William Herschel in November 1784. It is a Seyfert galaxy and has been intensively studied. In this PIRATE image, a bright nucleus is seen surrounded by a disk with a faint outer ring. Distance c.200million ly, Diameter c.142,000ly.

The fainter galaxy (IC 5283, mag. 14.3) was discovered more than a century later by Guillaume Bigourdan in September 1891. A faint tail of material can just be seen emanating from the right of the galaxy, which is tilted at an oblique angle.
