NGC 1 & NGC 2 Spiral Galaxies in Pegasus

About this image

These two galaxies (NGC 1 centre, NGC 2 below) make an optical pair, but lie far apart and were discovered by different observers at different times. NGC 2 is both more distant, smaller and fainter than its 'companion'.

This 120-second PIRATE image reveals only the bright nuclei and fuzzy 'disks'. I have requested a 180-second exposure, so it will be interesting to see what more, if anything, is revealed.

NGC 1 is a mag. 13.7 spiral galaxy, discovered by Heinrich d'Arrest in September 1861. It lies at a distance of c.200million ly. Size c.120,000 ly

NGC 2 is a mag. 15.0 spiral galaxy, discovered by the Earl of Rosse in August 1873. Distance c.325million ly. Size c.111,000 ly.
