About this image

Another spacecraft and its carrier fleeing the Earth, this time going from Japan to Mars on the evening of 19 October. An opportunity to image the probe and its carrier came in the early hours of 21 October. The carrier rocket was quite easy to capture, even though I had no predictions, it was bound to be near the MMX spacecraft. I searched in vain for the MMX spacecraft, even checking that the star trails had not hidden it.

The carrier was tumbling, so my estimate of 16.8 is an average view. Now that predictions are available on ProjectPluto, the prediction for the spacecraft is mag 19 - I think it is fainter and beyond my capability
