NGC 326 Bi-nuclear Radio Galaxy in Pisces

About this image

This rare bi-nuclear galaxy was discovered by Heinrich d'Arrest in August 1865, using an 11" f/17.5 Merz refractor at Copenhagen Observatory (Østervold Observatory).

This type of galaxy arises from the incomplete merger of two galaxies, leaving the galaxy temporarily with a double nucleus. NGC 326 is also a radio galaxy. A fascinating object albeit at mag. 14.33.

This much enlarged PIRATE image shows the two nuclei (centre) with not much sign of surrounding matter - not to be confused with the bright double star at top right!  The bright star is HD 5650, a c. mag. 7.0 orange giant.
