Historical Section Meeting 2025

Saturday 31st May 2025 10:00 - 16:00

The Historical Section’s annual meeting for 2025 will take place at the Devon and Exeter Institution, Exeter, Devon.

This historic library contains many astronomical treasures (see below) – in particular, the lunar globe built by the station-master astronomer Roger Langdon (1825-1894), whose 200th birthday we will be celebrating.

The line-up is as follows:

10:00     Welcome and housekeeping announcements (the DEI opens at 10:00)

10:10     Bill Barton – “Roger Langdon”

11:05     A tour of the DEI library

12:00     Lunch. The DEI does not have a café, however the DEI is in the centre of Exeter, so there are plenty of places to eat nearby.

13:00     Welcome back

13:05     Beatrice Steele – “The Norman Lockyer Observatory and archaeoastronomy”

14:00     Carolyn Kennett – “Mary Proctor”

14:55     Afternoon break

15:05     Wayne Orchiston – “John Tebbutt”

16:00     Meeting closes (and the DEI closes too)

On Sunday 1st June, we intend to visit the Norman Lockyer Observatory in Sidmouth, Devon.

The event is free to attend, but please can you register here so that we can estimate numbers.
