Space Weather: Past, Present & Future; Is It Safe to Fly Today?
Professor Clive – Dyer Surrey Spece Centre
Space Weather refers to the effects of solar activity on Earth, including disruptions to satellites, communications, GPS, power grids and aircraft, as well as increased radiation exposure. Now recognised as one of the UK’s highest national risks, research at the Surrey Space Centre is helping to improve the monitoring and forecasting of these events. Although recent solar storms have been moderate, much larger events have occurred in the past, underlining the need to understand and prepare for their potentially serious impacts.
