Scientific analysis of amateur spectra

A workshop delivered in May 2019 at the Society for Astronomical Sciences Symposium in Ontario, California

This annual meeting is the primary pro-am astronomical conference in the US. The workshop addressed three main topics: producing an exo-atmospheric relative flux spectrum of a star which could be submitted to a spectroscopic database; calibrating that spectrum in absolute flux; and correcting for interstellar absorption and reddening to generate the spectrum actually emitted by the star. The slides used in the workshop are available here. They contain many references to published material and clickable links to these resources are available here.

The British Astronomical Association supports amateur astronomers around the UK and the rest of the world. Find out more about the BAA or join us.
