About this image

This is one of a series of pictures (looking SSW across the Pyrenees towards Spain) captured during a visit to the Pic du Midi Observatory in 2016. Conditions were remarkable with excellent sky quality, seeing and transparency.

The image is a single 30 second exposure from a tripod mounted and unmodified DSLR so the stars are trailed and parts of the galaxy are not very well resolved. Having processed my images, I was quite shocked by the level of light pollution in the view from a remote mountain top at an elevation of nearly 3000 metres!
