About this image

This image is a mosaic of seven separate but overlapping images made in quick succession. The red filter reduces the effects of poor seeing almost as well as an IR-pass filter, but transmits about three times as much light, allowing shorter exposures.

Each image used 1500 out of 3000 frames, stacked in Autostakkert!2, then sharpened and processed in Registax. The mosaic was assembled using IMerge before further slight cropping to regularise the shape.

The north polar region of the Moon was favourably librated on the 9th January, showing several little-known craters quite well. The large, degraded crater J Herschel is at centre left, and other craters such as Byrd and Peary can be seen near the limb towards the top of the image.
