About this image

At mag -0.7, Mercury was easy to find in the daytime sky by offsetting from the Sun. Imaging was very difficult due to a gusty breeze shaking the telescope. To get a reasonable number of frames to work with it was necessary to capture around 100,000 frames in total (~25 AVI files of 4000 frames each). Frames were initially selected using Registax to sort most of the best images into the first 30% of the sequence; these were then saved as separate AVI files. The individual frames were then selected by visual inspection. Verification images to confirm the reality of features were processed from independent sets of frames, then all the best frames were combined to produce the final image. Comparison with an appropriately blurred Messenger image shows good agreement with the spacecraft data.
