About this image

300 of 3000 frames stacked in Autostakkert!2, wavelet processing and histogram adjustment in Registax.

The Rupes Altai is part of the outer ring of the Nectaris impact basin, part of which is visible at the top right. The badly degraded crater Catharina is towards the top (north) of the image. At lower centre is the curious linear feature known as Larrieu's Dam, which is a ridge on the NW side of the small trapezium-shaped crater Polybius K. Under the right illumination, as in this image, it resembles a dam holding back a small lake, which it clearly is not! For a discussion of this feature, see the BAA Lunar Section Circular vol 50 No 5 from May 2013.
