About this image

300 of 3000 frames stacked in Autostakkert!2, wavelet processing and histogram adjustment in Registax.

Mare Australe lies in the Eastern libration zone, and is quite hard to see except under favourable libration conditions. At the time this image was taken it was moderately well-presented. It differs from the better-known maria in being more a collection of lava-filled craters than a continuous expanse, but it is understood to be a very ancient impact basin that was subjected to many further impacts before episodes of basalt flooding. Images from Apollo missions and lunar probes show it to be roughly circular overall.
