Model of William Lassell's observatory

About this image

A model of William Lassell's observatory, Starfield, which was erected in West Derby, Liverpool, in the mid 1840s. This housed his 24" speculum mirror telescope. As part of the Society for the History of Astronomy's Summer Picnic this year to Liverpool, we were given a behind the scenes tour of Liverpool's World Museum and got to see the 24" mirror, the finder scope to the 24" telescope, and this model of the observatory, amongst other items. We also had a bespoke talk and show in the museum's planetarium by Patrick Kiernan. The World Museum in Liverpool is well worth a visit if you've not been before. A full report of the SHA's Summer Picnic will be written in due course.
