(693) Zerbinetta occults 4U 461-49902

About this image

The mag 13.6 82km diameter asteroid (693) Zerbinetta was predicted to occult the mag 13.9 star 4U 461-49902 on 2018 March 8. Their combined magnitude of 12.99 would drop by 0.5 mag for up to 5.5 seconds.

My observatory was inside the predicted shadow zone. The predicted probability of success at my site was 48.4% and I recorded an occultation duration of 4.80s. I watched the asteroid approaching the star, then they merged and the occultation occurred. The times of disappearance and reappearance were:-

D     00:42:58.44 +/- 0.08s

R     00:43:03.24 +/- 0.08s

The attached plot shows the analysis of the light curve using Tangra and AOTA software.

Another 5 stations across Europe were logged in OccultWatcher for this event, so we might have some chords across the asteroid's profile.
