About this image

The eta Aquarids (IAU MDC code 031 ETA) are debris from our old friend comet 1P/Halley. The Earth passes through this cometary stream in early May giving us the swift ETAs then again in late October, producing the Orionids.

As seen from the British Isles their radiant rises as dawn approaches. The low altitude radiant can produce long-pathed trails as the ETAs hit the atmosphere at shallow angles. Peak activity was on May 6. I recorded a small number of ETAs and this nicely framed example (estimated peak mag -1.5) shot from lower left to upper right, its trail passing Altair.
