Omega Cen and Cen group galaxies

About this image

A widefield view of the largest globular in the sky includes quite a few faint galaxies including the very strange object ESO270-017 (labelled on the full sized image) which is thought to be a fragment of the nearby dwarf elliptical NGC5237 caused by a close encounter with Centaurus A (NGC5128) about 500 million years ago. NGC5128 is just off the top of this frame.

This reminds me why I got into astronomy in the first place.

Thanks. Omega Cen is a fantastic object but the fact that you can image the consequences of a galaxy collision 500 million years ago using a 72mm refractor is pretty amazing.
