About this image

An enlarged view of the previous picture showing Mars as it approaches opposition lying well south of the ecliptic in the constellation Capricornus. Mars currently lies 24 deg south and shines brilliantly at magnitude -2.6, well outshining Jupiter. The very dark skies and additional 5 deg altitude over the south coast of England make observation much easier.
